Wedding dresses hidden for one hundred years

The Godinton House Preservation Trust is pleased to loan Lillie Bruce Ward’s wedding dress to a local exhibition to celebrate weddings through the ages.

Lillie Partington married Robert Bruce Ward in 1897 and purchased the Godinton Estate in 1918, where she resided for the remainder of her life. The dress, made by a Belgravia dressmaker, is of the finest silk and satin in the style typical of the period with a high waist and puff sleeves.

Also to be seen for the first time is a much later wedding dress from 1926 when Beatrice Gubser married Edward Bruce Ward (Lillie’s son) on 4th August 1926. Fashions had changed immensely and this charming dress has a straight bodice with handkerchief points and a built in train.

The exhibition of wedding dresses and floral displays is in St Margaret’s Church Hothfield on May 28th and 29th from 10.30am to 5pm. Free entrance.
