Winter work

CrataegusThe cockspur thorns in the walled garden are covered in berries now and usually hold onto them even when all the leaves have dropped but this year they seem to be full of blackbirds enjoying the fat fruits.  We’re busy in the gardens collecting leaves and finally cutting back the Dahlias which were still flowering merrily until last week.  I cut myself a last vase of autumn Delphiniums and Penstemons at the weekend – it’ll have to be Cornus twigs and Holly now.
