Happy New Year

The hips of Rosa ‘Scharlachglut’ and Alfie in his matching winter coat

I always heave a sigh of relief when we pass the winter equinox and I know that the days must be getting longer even though it’s dark when I go out with the dogs in the morning and dark when I come home.

The shoots of spring bulbs in the lawns and through the Wild Garden are another optimistic sign that the new season is getting under way. In the greenhouses we have sown our sweet peas and on wet days we are scrubbing and sterilising to keep pests and disease at bay so that we start a new year with the best chance for all our new sowings.

On dry days we are pruning shrubs and climbers and cutting back herbaceous borders ready for the new growth.
