The garden can look quite bleak on a wet and windy day in January but there is something to cheer every day of the year. The shrubs which flower at this time of year have to work hard to attract a pollinator and a lot will do it with an intense fragrance. The Chimonanthus praecox is now covered in small waxy flowers with a powerfully sweet scent. The witch hazels are just starting to open their spidery flowers and Daphnes are throwing out spicy fragrance. One small sprig from any of these in a jar on my desk is enough to fill my tiny office with cheerful scent.
