During the closed season, we take the opportunity to complete any major building repair work. This season we replaced one of the window frames in the Great Chamber that had fallen victim to rot. The new frames were made on site out of oak. We also discovered one of the beams above the frame had been weakened by the deathwatch beetle, which a mouse had taken advantage of and created a nest. Thankfully we have a very hardworking building team who managed to repair the problem quickly despite the awful weather!
This week we have been very busy cleaning the Great Chamber after the frame repair work. The extensive wood panelling had gathered a lot of dust, despite our efforts to prevent it. The conservation cleaning is a long but enjoyable task and we can’t wait to welcome you back on 25th March.
