New Year Resolutions

The start of the new year is always an optimistic time in the garden with days getting longer and every day a new bud or flower appearing. The snowdrops are just starting to get going and there are the wonderfully sweet scents of winter flowering shrubs doing their best to attract the occasional hardy insects to pollinate them.  After a long, hot summer the Chimonanthus (wintersweet) next to one of the gates is covered in flowers and the Hamamelis is also attracting adventurous bees on a sunny day.
